Mississauga Councillor Carolyn Parrish Announces Resignation
Ward 5 Councillor to Step Down March 15th
Running for Mayor in Upcoming By-Election
Mississauga, ON - February 20th, 2024 - Ward 5 Mississauga Councillor Carolyn Parrish has announced her resignation, effective March 15th, 2024. Parrish plans to register as a mayoral candidate in the upcoming Mississauga mayoral by-election.
Parrish has served as Ward 5 Councillor since 2014, following the departure of Bonnie Crombie. She is a well-known figure in Mississauga politics, having previously served as a federal Member of Parliament (MP) for 13 years.
In a statement, Parrish said that she made the decision to resign to ensure that Ward 5 residents have a voice in the mayoral by-election. By resigning before the official campaign period begins, a by-election for her Ward 5 seat can be avoided, saving taxpayers approximately $500,000.
Parrish's resignation comes at a time when the Mississauga mayoral race is heating up. Several other candidates have declared their intentions to run, including former Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey and former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion's son, Peter McCallion.
The Mississauga municipal election is scheduled for June 10th, 2024. Residents can find more information about the election, including how to register to vote, on the City of Mississauga website.
